Lately...

Things have been getting pretty interesting lately.  My husband and I finally filed for custody of my step daughter.  We have a court date at the beginning of April and I think we have a pretty strong case.  Her mother was served with the papers but hasn't said anything to us about it.  Instead, she is 'punishing' us by only allowing us to see my step daughter on the weekends.  But hopefully this will all change and we will have full custody by the time everything is said and done.  I wish I could tell you that was all but it isn't.  My step daughter has also started therapy this week.  I won't go into details but I will say its because of behaviors she is acting out at her mother's house and now at school.  We aren't sure where exactly it is coming from but we suspect its someone at her mother's house.

On a happier note, we have decided to start a garden!  I'm very excited.  Both mine and my husband's families have had gardens and I myself grew a small garden when I was in elementary school.  So far we have basil, dill, tomatoes, peppers, wild flowers, and sunflowers started.  We haven't constructed the garden yet but we have the plants growing inside.  The kids are also very excited to start the garden.  They help me water them and take care of time.  I'm also planning on starting a compost pile.  I've been researching it a bit today.

What kind of fun stuff do you do with you family?

Teacher Calls Child A Loser.

A sixth grade teacher in North Carolina is in the news for calling one of his students a 'loser' on one of her papers because she got a low grade.  And apparently this isn't the first time this has happened.  He claims its a learning strategy.

I understand trying different methods of teaching to help children learn but this is not one of them.  Where is the logic in putting a child down to make them gain success?  That could backfire.  And badly.  It could go one of two ways, the child will want to prove him wrong or they will begin to believe it and just stop caring.  Children need encouraging teachers.  Not discouraging.  Especially not in sixth grade.  And the crazy thing is that some parents claim to have agreed with this method.  However, when asked to stand up in support, they all declined.

How would you feel if one of your child's teachers referred to them as a loser on their paper for a low grade?

School District Bans Prom.

A school district in Northern Mississippi has cancelled their prom after a lesbian student requested the right to take her girlfriend to prom and wear a tux.  [Lesbian teen in prom flap sues, returns to school]  They claim its against the runs to have a same sex couple attend prom [I read this in another article].

After reading some of the comments about this article, I am just disgusted by people.  I've read comments such as 'the girl should withdraw her lawsuit because she is ruining it for everyone else' and others bring up the bible and what not.  Well, let me say this.

Not everyone believes in the bible.  This country says we have a right to choose any religion or lack of.  So that agrument is out the window.  It is none of the school district's business what this girl wears to prom or who she takes.  Her and her girlfriend both attend the school so I'm sure everyone [students and teachers] have seen them together.

I can't believe that a school district would go that far because they don't agree with her sexual orentation.  And I can't believe other people had the nerve to blame the cancelation of the prom on this girls actions [suing the school district for violating her rights].  Its the school district they should be blaming.  This girl simply wants the same rights every other student gets.  Why treat her any different because of her sexual orentation.  What if someone treated your child differently because they were a girl or boy or because the color of their skin?  Would you not tell them to stand up for what they believe in?  Would you tell them to 'stop ruining it for everyone else'?  No, you wouldn't.  Just because you may not agree with someone's life choices [sexual orentation in this case] doesn't mean they shouldn't stand up for what they believe in.

I full support this girl and I hope she wins.

What's your opinion?  Do you think she is ruining it for everyone else?  Do you think she should have the same rights as every other student?  What do you think of the way the school district is handling it?  What would you do if it was your child?
